I decided to give each of my children's teacher a succulent for teacher appreciation week. This year has been hard on students and teachers with all the changes and covid protocols. My kids teachers have been so wonderful at helping my children when they struggle and communicating with us about what is going on. Teachers have worked hard this year making sure our children can still have fun and trying to make their school experience as normal as possible. They encourage our children, chee...

Cowboy boot planter

Image
I made a hen and chick arrangement using a cowboy boot. The full video can be seen on my youtube channel  Crazy plant lady blog . The first step was to cut out the holes where I wanted to place the succulents. There is multiple layers to cut through. I cut through the leather layer first, then the fabric layers. The layers are pretty thick so this was the easiest way I found to do it. The second was to drill holes into the sole of the boot. Succulents need proper drainage. My experience with hen and chicks has made me believe they hate water. I wanted to make sure they had plenty of drainage holes so I used a medium sized drill bit and drilled four holes into the boot.  Once I had drainage holes and spots to put each of the hen and chicks I started filling the boot with dirt. I filled until the soil was lined up with the bottom hole. Then placed the first succulent into the hole. I had to remove some of the old dried up leaves to get a good fit. Then I used my fing...

2020 was a crazy year with covid and stay at home orders. Many people were working at home or not working at all. Many people have started new hobbies during this time. Hobbies have helped keep them busy and provide them with some normalcy during these crazy times. Plants are one such hobby that have helped people during trying times. Retailers and consumers have both been affected by the pandemic. Consumers have found a new love and appreciation for plants.  Retailers are reporting major increases in sales. Demand has increased during the pandemic. Customers are still visiting stores even if they have to wear mask and sanitize their hands In fact a small plant shop opened their doors during the pandemic and are doing really well. The community has supported this small business and continued to do so. Etsy sellers and online merchants have also seen increases in sales. Some people can't leave their homes to go to a store, but they are still finding ways to bring beautif...

The best part is you the costumer will not pay anymore than you usually would. We only recommend product that we would personally use.    Nerve plants faint or more accurately droop when they dry out to much. Once nerve plants are watered they will bounce back  Frequent fainting will eventually take its toll on the plant. Nerve plants have gotten a reputation of being a little tricky. People also call them drama queen plants. These two pictures were taken 2 hours apart. Keep soil moist, but not saturated for nerve plants. Water every 4 days during growing season. Do not leave nerve plants sitting in water. They are prone to root rot. A standard potting mix will work well for nerve pla...

The best part is you the costumer will not pay anymore than you usually would. We only recommend product that we would personally use.  If you have ever been to a gardening center I am sure you have seen orchid pots. I saw one the other day while at the store and had to buy it. I do not grow orchids and wasn't sure what I was going to use it for, but it was cute. I tried googling to see how other people used orchid pots for succulents, but I didn't see any with pots like mine. My main concern was the holes. How am I suppose to fill this pot up with soil when it has holes all over it.  I decided to just go for it. I sat the pot inside a small tote bucket and started filling it up some soil...

This weekend they asked if they could go pick out their own plants. We decided on succulents since they are harder to kill. They each picked out succulents that they liked. They got aloe, cactus, ogre's ear, and a spider plant. The spider plant is not a succulent, but is hard to kill. They were so excited about their plants and came home and f...

Which pot should you use?

Some plants do better in a certain type of pot. As you probably know there are a lot of types of pots.  There are three main things I look at when deciding on a pot for my plant material, drainage holes, and size. First lets talk about material.  Some of the most popular types of pots are plastic, terra cotta, and ceramic. Plastic pots are usually cheap and come in a variety of colors. They tend to retain moisture meaning you shouldn't have to water as frequently. Plastic is a great option when needing a hanging basket or a light weight pot. On the other hand terra cotta pots tend to be more expensive, but are porous. This means you will need to water more frequently. Terra cotta pots are ...

Tradescantia zebrina will grow beautifully and quickly if put outside for the summer. They are not cold tolerant so bring them in before the first frost.  Light  Tradescantia zebrina are kind of picky about light. Indoors tradescantia zebrina will do great in an east or west facing window. They will get lots of natural light in the morning with an east facing window or evening light with west facing window and will receive bright indirect light the rest of the day. This is important for tradescantia zebrina too much light will burn their leaves. If they don't ...

I hear people say all the time they can't keep succulents alive. They constantly kill them. Succulents and cacti are suppose to be an easy plant to care for, but you have to understand their needs. The number one reason I see for succulents dying is over watering. Over watering and under watering  Succulents thrive on neglect. ...
