Succulents stretch or etiolate when they don't receive enough light. Once you move them to a place where they are getting enough light you are still stuck with a stretched succulent. They won't ever go back to looking normal with out some intervention. Beheading also works in the case of root rot. Beheading will save the healthy part of the plant while getting ready of the rotted parts.
Start with beheading the top of the succulent where the new growth isn't stretched. To do this use clean sterilized scissors. Cut 2 inches below the non stretched growth. Remove any leaves on the bottom of the stem until you have 2 inches of bare stem. Don't throw away the leaves you can propagate them to make more succulents.
Once you have removed the leaves set the beheaded succulent and leaves aside for a few days to allow them to form a callous. A callous acts like a scab preventing bacteria and fungus from infecting the plant one it is put in soil or water.Once your leaves and plant have formed a callous you can water propagate it or stick it into soil.
If using water do not stick the stem into water. Leave the bottom of the stem about an inch above the water. If using soil stick them stem into the soil and leave in alone for a couple of weeks without watering. In a couple of weeks you should start to see roots forming. Now you can water your succulent. You can propagate the leaves with soil or water as well. If using soil just lay them on top of the soil and do not water. Once you see roots in a couple weeks you can start misting or lightly watering the roots only. Do not get water on the leaves. You will start see babies forming with in a months time. When the baby gets big enough the leaf will dry up and fall off on its own.
