My husband had some old boots laying around so I wanted to try and make a planter out of them. It turned out better than I thought it would and is now one of my favorite planters. I have burro tails and climbing aloe growing inside it.

The first step in this project was to cut a hole near the toe of the boot. It was a little tricky due to how many layer lined the inside of the boot. Plus its a steel toe boot so I couldn't get as close to the toe as I would have liked. I used a sharp knife to make the initial cut and then was able to use scissors to cut the rest of the hole. Once I got that cut I used the knife again to start a cut in the lining.

Once I had cut the hole in the top of the boot I then needed to drill holes in the bottom of the boot for drainage. I drilled a lot of holes. I was concerned the lining in the boot would hold moisture, so I made sure to drill plenty of drainage holes and use a gritty soil.

I mixed my own soil using two part chicken grit and one part potting soil. To allow for good drainage as well. The chicken grit does add weight to the soil, but for smaller planters I don't mind.

I put some in the toe end of the boot to make a light layer of soil. I then added my climbing aloe and put more soil in through the hole until all the roots were and the base of the stem was covered in soil. Once that was done I added soil to the rest of the boot until is was full. The next step was add my burros tail to the boot. I had to more careful with these since the leaves are really fragile. I did end up losing 6 leaves during the process, but that's not too bad considering how fragile burro tails are. I love the way my burro tails look trailing down the boot and it really is an interesting planter. If you have any questions about making a boot planter, have made something similar, or made this leave a comment and let me know how it turned out for you.
